How BMI is calculated

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Someone who weighs 70 kg and is 1.75 m tall has a BMI of 22.9.

The WHO classifies adults as: under 18.5 (underweight), 18.5 to 24.9 (normal weight), 25 to 29.9 (overweight) and 30 or more (obesity, in three classes).

What BMI does not show

BMI cannot tell fat from muscle. People who lift weights can have a high BMI with a low body fat percentage. It also ignores where fat is stored, as well as age, sex and ethnicity.

Treat the number as a starting point. Waist size, body fat percentage and your trend over time tell a fuller story.

Frequently asked questions

Does BMI work for people who lift weights?

It is a rough reference, and it can overstate risk because muscle weighs more than fat. Track waist size and body fat too.

What is a normal BMI?

For adults, between 18.5 and 24.9, according to the WHO.

Can I use it for children and teenagers?

No. They use growth charts by age and sex, read by a health professional.

Can I track my BMI over time?

Yes. In ENDORFINAPP you log body measurements and see your progress in charts.
